Islamic State Takes Responsibility for the Sunday Church Attack in DRC

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a fatal attack on a church in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, according to its Telegram channel. According to city officials, militants affiliated with the Islamic State were responsible for the Sunday attack on the Komanda Catholic Church, which killed at least 40 people.
More than half of Komanda’s people fled as a result of the attack, which occurred about midnight. According to multiple reports, the most vulnerable locations, Base, Zunguluka, Umoja, and Ngombenyama, have practically been evacuated.
Some people are moving to Kisangani, while others are headed to Bunia, often on foot, on motorbike, or in crammed cabs. The combined troops of the FARDC and UPDF have strengthened their presence in the region, providing some relief to those who remain, although concern persists. Economic activity has been halted as markets, businesses, pharmacies, and even houses of worship have closed, and farmers are unable to reach their fields.
