Days Before Testifying in a Corruption Investigation, a South African Police General was Shot

The attack on Sunday night injured Major General Feroz Khan, the suspended deputy head of crime intelligence, on his way home. He had emergency surgery, according to reports in the local media.

An investigation into the occurrence has been started by the authorities. Regarding claims that the shooting was related to Khan’s planned testimony before the Madlanga Commission, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe advised caution.

The commission was formed in response to Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive allegations that law enforcement agencies and portions of the state had been compromised by organized crime.

When Khan’s name came up during the hearings, he was one of those asked to testify. He was anticipated to be questioned about a botched drug operation in Johannesburg in 2021, as well as claims made by local media about his connections to political figure Brown Mogotsi and opposition leader Julius Malema.

Khan made an unsuccessful attempt earlier this month to stop investigators from looking at electronic devices that were seized following his arrest. Prior to eventually withdrawing the application, he had also asked for his testimony to be heard in secret.

The incident heightens worries about the security of anyone connected to the investigation. Weeks after testifying before investigators, another commission-related witness was assassinated in front of family members in December. Along with a businessman and another senior police official, Khan was detained in May in connection with an alleged illegal gold possession and trade investigation.
