In Jos, Nigeria, Gunmen Attack a Bar, Killing 33 People

According to local accounts, at least 33 people were killed when gunmen opened fire on a bar in Jos, the capital of Nigeria’s Plateau state, sparking mob reprisal. The attack happened on Sunday night in Jos North’s Anguwan Rukuba neighborhood. According to early reports, unidentified assailants opened fire at a restaurant and pub, killing at least 12 people.

It is still unknown how many people perished in the gunshot and the ensuing mob violence, but the dead toll eventually increased to 33.According to a local youth leader, the attackers first targeted attendees at the venue before a mob assembled and started hitting adjacent vendors and bystanders. The reaction resulted in the deaths of at least three persons, some of whom were burned.

To stop more bloodshed, authorities in Jos North have imposed a curfew and started an investigation. Exams at the University of Jos were postponed because of growing tensions. The state of Plateau has long been plagued by violence, especially in rural areas where land disputes between largely Fulani Muslim herders and Christian farmers have resulted in recurring Òđو.” Large-scale attacks in the city have been uncommon in recent years, however sectarian conflicts have occasionally occurred in Jos.
