In Benin Elections, all Parliamentary Seats go to Government Parties
Benin held parliamentary elections on 11 January to choose members of its next National Assembly, with official results announced on Saturday evening. The outcome handed all 109 seats to parties aligned with the government, while the main opposition party failed to meet the threshold required to enter parliament.
The presidential coalition, made up of the Union for Progress and Renewal (UP-R) and the Republican Bloc (BR), secured every seat in the legislature. UP-R won 60 seats, while BR took the remaining 49.
These parliamentary elections were the only recent polls in which the main opposition party, the Democrats, was allowed to participate. However, the party did not reach the required 20 percent of votes in any district, a condition necessary to gain representation in parliament.
Local elections were held at the same time, but the Democrats were barred from contesting and had no candidates on the ballot. Benin is also set to hold presidential elections in April. The Democrats will again be absent from the race after failing to secure the number of endorsements needed to field a candidate.
