Guinea-Bissau’s President’s Mandate Expiration Date is Causing Tensions to Increase

Amid a dispute over President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s five-year term expiration date, Guinea-Bissau’s opposition has promised to shut down the country on Thursday. While the Supreme Court of Justice in Guinea-Bissau has ruled that Embalo’s mandate technically expires on September 4, opposition figures claim that it ends on Thursday.

Concerns about possible instability in a nation with a history of military takeovers have increased since Embalo declared on Sunday that the presidential and legislative elections will be delayed until November 30.

The PAI Terra Ranka coalition, led by the previous ruling PAIGC party, and the Cabaz Garandi alliance said in a statement on Tuesday that “We are going to paralyse the country totally on February 27… The city of Bissau will be lifeless.

The opposition leaders’ mounting dissatisfaction with the election schedule is reflected in this declaration.

The electoral scenario has been made even more complicated by the government’s decision to indefinitely postpone the November 2024 parliamentary elections, citing budgetary and technological difficulties.
