Greece Declares That it is Not an Open Corridor to Europe” and Cracks Down on Irregular Migration

In a statement to Bild, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated his stern position on irregular migration, saying that “Greece is not an open corridor to Europe.” In order to halt migratory flows at their origin, he urged a coordinated European response and better collaboration with Libya.

Although Mitsotakis reiterated Greece’s dedication to legitimate migration routes, he cautioned that immediate, coordinated EU action—rather than merely Greek responsibility—is required to address the current issue. Simultaneously, Greece’s Migration Minister rejected what he referred to as “fairy tales with baby mamas,” indicating a shift in the country’s perspective on asylum-seeking narratives.

This follows the rescue of more than 500 migrants off the island of Gavdos by the Greek Coast Guard. Eight Egyptian nationals who were suspected of being traffickers were taken into custody and accused of criminal organisation and unlawful entrance.

Stricter legislation aimed at preventing marine arrivals from North Africa was also agreed by parliament on Friday. Reception centres at Lavrio, Evros, Diavata, and Malakasa received the 515 rescued migrants, 85 of them were youngsters. Greece is still in the forefront of the European migrant discussion and has made it clear that it wants more than just pity; it wants tighter boundaries.
