Forty-Five Easter Pilgrims are Killed in a Bus Disaster in South Africa, and the Lone Survivor is an Eight-year-Old Girl.

South Africa (AP) — A bus full of pilgrims traveling to a well-known Easter celebration in rural South Africa crashed into a bridge on a mountain pass, fell into a gorge, and burst into flames, killing all forty-five people on board. An 8-year-old girl was the only person who survived.
It served as a heartbreaking reminder of how dangerous South Africa’s roadways can be during the Easter holiday when millions of people travel throughout the nation over the weekend. Just one day before Thursday’s terrible collision, authorities had issued many alerts cautioning drivers of the danger. The bus transporting devotees from nearby Botswana crashed off the bridge, falling more than 150 feet (50 meters), and catching fire as it went, yet the girl managed to survive.
Forensic investigators retrieved what they believed were 34 of the 45 bodies but couldn’t be sure of the exact number, reflecting the gruesome nature of the crash. Many of the victims trapped inside the bus were burned beyond recognition, authorities said. According to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the fatalities seemed to be entirely from Botswana. They were traveling to the tiny hamlet of Moria in the province of Limpopo for the Easter weekend pilgrimage, which draws hundreds of thousands of Zion Christian Church members.
