They travelled from all over the world to see one of the most well-known shrines in Catholicism. On Monday, more than 270,000 pilgrims flocked to Portugal’s sanctuary of Fátima to commemorate the first known apparition of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children on May 13, 1917.
According to the Catholic Church, the children received six visits from the Virgin Mary during which she revealed to them a set of predictions known as the Three Secrets of Fátima.Pope Francis, Leo’s predecessor, made two trips to Fátima. In honour of the 100th anniversary of the Virgin Mary’s apparitions, Pope canonised two of the shephered children in 2017. When he travelled to Portugal for the 2023 World Youth Day, he visited the shrine twice. This year’s trip follows Pope Leo’s first Sunday speech as pope in St. Peter’s Square, when he urged peace in Gaza and Ukraine.
Leo reaffirmed the timeless exhortation to “never again war” when speaking to the world’s major nations from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica. According to Father Juan Carlos López from Fátima, “I think he will do it very well because he is the Pope that the Holy Spirit has chosen to lead the Church in these trying times.
