Following Machar’s Treason Accusations, the Opposition Demands a Change of Government, Putting South Sudan in Danger
The fragile peace deal that is keeping the youngest country in the world together is breaking down, raising concerns about a full-scale civil war breaking out again. This week saw a sharp escalation in South Sudan’s political crisis as Riek Machar’s leading opposition group called on its followers to organize for “regime change.”
The administration accusing Machar of treason and dismissing him from his post in the precarious unity government is the immediate cause of the call to weapons. The action raises the possibility of a fresh, widespread violence in the unstable country and suggests that the 2018 peace agreement that put an end to a catastrophic five-year civil war may fall apart.
When First Vice President Riek Machar was officially charged with murder, treason, and crimes against humanity on Thursday, it was the direct cause of the situation.
He was then ousted from his influential position in the transitional government, where he had been the primary power-sharing partner of President Salva Kiir. Machar had previously spent a number of months under house arrest. The government accuses him of planning a March militia attack on a military installation in Nasir County, Upper Nile State.
