Following A Prison Breach In Central Haiti, Police Report That 11 Prisoners Were Murdered In Shootouts
Prisoners escaped from a facility in the central Haitian seaside town of Saint-Marc on Friday, according to police, as the nation’s authorities fight to stop rampant gang violence.
A representative for Haiti’s National Police, Michel Ange Louis Jeune, stated during a news conference in Port-au-Prince that eleven alleged fugitive prisoners had died in gun battles with law enforcement.
He withheld other information, such as the number of prisoners who managed to escape.
According to the local media, there was gunfire heard close to the Saint Marc jail.
The prison’s capacity was not immediately apparent.
In Haiti, this is the third jail break of the year. Gangs stormed the nation’s two largest prisons in Port-au-Prince, the capital, in March, freeing thousands of prisoners as part of a concerted effort that ultimately resulted in Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s resignation.
The police spokesman also highlighted one prisoner who was detained in a separate anti-crime operation on Thursday together with 14 other individuals, including three police officers, after they were accused of escaping earlier this year.
