Egypt Sees A Sharp Increase In The Number Of People Escaping Violence

UNHCR Egypt has registered about 748,000 refugees and asylum seekers, most of whom being women and children who have just arrived in Egypt after escaping the violent violence that broke out in Sudan in April 2023. The number of Sudanese refugees registered since the start of the crisis has nearly tripled, and this trend is predicted to continue.

Resources are running low for the Egyptian government, UN agencies, and other key partners to offer safe, secure, high-quality learning environments to children from the host community and refugees.

$109 million is needed, according to the 2024 Sudan Regional Refugee Response plan, to address the region’s needs for refugee education. Just 20% of the total has been raised thus far, of which $4.3 million, or 40% of what Egypt needs, has been provided.

UNHCR, UNICEF, and Education Cannot Wait (ECW), a high-level UN mission to Egypt this week, emphasized the financing gap and demanded immediate, enhanced international support for children who have been forcibly displaced by the ongoing war, both inside Sudan and in neighboring countries.
