Egypt calls for Israel to Leave Southern Lebanon Completely
A full “Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon” is necessary, Egypt’s foreign minister said Friday while in Lebanon. Lebanese refugees should be given the chance to return to their homes in the region, Badr Abdelatty stressed during a briefing in Beirut.
Egypt firmly believes that Israel must leave southern Lebanon completely and unconditionally, making sure that no Lebanese territory or sovereignty is jeopardised, said Badr Abdelatty.
A truce mediated by the United States was signed on November 27 and called for Hezbollah to move north of the Litani River by January 26 and Israeli forces to leave southern Lebanon. Israel remained present in more than a dozen villages, even though the Lebanese army and U.N. peacekeepers had already been stationed in a number of them before the deadline.
The deadline for meeting the parameters of the ceasefire has been extended to February 18 by the United States and Lebanon on Sunday. The “illegitimate and unjustifiable targeting of Lebanese civilians returning to their homes” was something Abdelatty denounced.
