Eastern DRC: as M23 Rebels Advance, Medical facilities are Strained by Combat Injuries

The already precarious state of healthcare in the DRC has gotten worse due to the march of M23 rebels in the eastern region. Hospitals are finding it more difficult to treat injuries sustained during the conflict between the rebels and the Congolese military. The fighting has also had an impact on 34 facilities in North Kivu.
But DRC hospitals face more than just war-related traumas. Medical services are also strained by frequent outbreaks of infectious diseases. The fact is that we do not have enough resources, in fact financial resources to provide all the support,” stated Dr. Jean Bruno, WHO Bureau Chief, North Kivu.
The truth is we do not have sufficient funding, in fact enough money to supply all the help,” stated Dr. Jean Bruno, WHO Bureau Chief, North Kivu. “The identification, research, and recovery of patients, especially infectious ones, such as those who had measles, cholera, or mpox” was another difficulty for medical organisations, he added.
The state of healthcare in the area is expected to deteriorate as the rebels continue their assault on the city of Uvira. Artillery has already struck medical facilities there, according to the non-governmental organisation Doctors without Borders.
