East Drc Conflict: Tshisekedi Chastises Ruto For The Nairobi Process
Kenyan President William Ruto has come under fire from DRC President Félix Tshisekedi for mismanaging the Nairobi Process, which was intended to foster communication with armed groups in the country’s eastern regions. Tshisekedi said that Ruto’s support for Rwanda has caused the initiative to stall, and he accused Ruto of doing so.
Uhuru Kenyatta, the former president of Kenya, started the process with the intention of assisting with efforts toward demobilization and disarmament.
There have been multiple rounds of meetings, but after the third round in December 2023, things have stagnated. The DRC and Kenya are becoming more tense, as Tshisekedi’s critique highlights. The East African Community (EAC) army’s actions to put down the M23 uprising have already drawn criticism from Kinshasa, which feels that the force has not done enough to carry out its mandate.
Nairobi’s announcement of the formation of the Congo River Alliance (AFC), a political-military organization connected to the M23, caused the situation to worsen even more. The DRC called its ambassadors to Kenya and the EAC for talks after Kenya declined to detain AFC leader Corneille Nangaa.
