The Opposition Leaders and the President of Somalia Come to a Historic Election Deal

Four important opposition figures and Somalia’s president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, have reached a deal on the country’s impending elections. The agreement describes the structure of the nation’s election process and was finalized on August 25, 2025.

This comes after Parliament passed a new electoral law in October 2024 that creates universal suffrage for the elections in 2026. Opposition members who are devoted to the current indirect clan-based system have strongly opposed this reform, despite the fact that it is viewed as a positive move.

Following two months of arduous negotiations that resulted in this accord, President Mohamoud voiced optimism, saying, “The doors to state reconstruction are now open. The agreement’s main components include the election of the president by Parliament and the universal suffrage system for parliamentary members.

Political parties will also receive official status if they win at least 10% of the seats in parliament. The adoption of a “one person, one vote” election system is a key commitment made by all political players.
