Doumbouya Makes a Long-Awaited Return to Guinea

After a three-week absence that sparked concerns about his health, President Mamady Doumbouya returned to Guinea on Friday and was warmly welcomed at the airport in Conakry. Doumbouya, 41, left Guinea on February 13 to attend an African Union gathering in Addis Ababa. Doumbouya has ruled the west African nation with an iron grip since 2021 as both president and junta commander. Since then, no one has seen him.

Doumbouya was declared in “good health” by authorities on Monday after undergoing a standard medical examination and taking “a few days of rest” during the summit. There was no mention of his whereabouts.

Doumbouya was welcomed with fanfare by officials and a brass band at Ahmed Sekou Toure International Airport in Conakry on Friday. Doumbouya was dressed in a brown tunic. An AFP journalist noted that he waved to several hundred people at the airport, many of whom were wearing caps and t-shirts featuring his image, from an armored truck.

Doumbouya’s public outings, where he looked noticeably slimmer, have been infrequent for months, which has fueled rumors concerning his health. In a referendum that excluded all of the main opposition leaders, Doumbouya, who had taken power in a 2021 coup, was elected president for a seven-year term in December.
