Detainees Killed By The Chadi Military In 2022 Protests

Human Rights Watch reported on Tuesday that the deaths of multiple prisoners who were taken into custody after protests in October 2022 were caused by the military of Chad.

The group said in its study that the actual death toll was probably considerably higher and that at least four individuals died on the way – Koro Toro jail, six more perished there, and it was unclear where the other man died.

At least 60 people were killed at the time when security forces in the country of central Africa opened fire on protests against interim leader Mahamat Deby Itno’s two-year extension of power. In Chad, where there had been little public opposition under the tenure of Deby Itno’s father, who governed for more than three decades until his killing in 2021, the uprising was unusual.

Hundreds were arrested and transported to Koro Toro, which is located roughly 370 miles (or 600 kilometers) away from the capital, N’djamena.

Human Rights Watch demanded that the African Union, United Nations agencies, and Chadian authorities look into reports of wrongful detentions, mistreatment in incarceration facilities, and fatalities in detention.

Human Rights Watch’s director for central Africa, Lewis Mudge, stated in a statement that “the Chadian government must act decisively to address the impunity for these abuses.”
