Chaos and Tensions Lead to one Death as Cameroon Awaits Elections
During tumultuous protests in Garoua on Tuesday, a young teacher was shot and killed. According to reports, a police officer fired the round. Meanwhile, tensions between opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma and President Paul Biya are intensifying to unprecedented heights.
The first casualty of Cameroon’s post-election turmoil is Zouhairatou Hassana. Following a tense national presidential election, the young teacher was shot and killed amid protests in Garoua on Tuesday, allegedly by a police officer, according to her neighbours.
The results of the poll, which are scheduled to be formally announced on Thursday, October 23, are still pending in Cameroon.
Biya, one of the longest-serving leaders of state and the oldest in Africa, was declared the victor with slightly over 53% of the vote, according to preliminary results issued by Cameroon’s national election commission. Of the votes, 35.19 per cent went to Tchiroma.
President Biya offered Tchiroma the prime ministership while final results were still pending, according to exclusive information received by the Francophone magazine Jeune Afrique. However, the article claims that Tchiroma turned down the offer.
