Cape Town’s Rental Boom Drives low-Income Individuals Into illegal Homes

A rise in rents in Cape Town’s inner city is exacerbating the housing problem, forcing many low-income inhabitants into unlawfully occupied and abandoned houses as affordable accommodation becomes increasingly out of reach.

Property prices in the central business district have risen dramatically, owing in part to a tourism boom and the quick spread of short-term rentals such as Airbnb, pricing out workers who rely on living close to jobs and amenities. As a result, both privately and publicly held abandoned properties are increasingly being taken by families who have few options.
