Bukavu Residents are Mobilized by Civil Society to Oppose the M23 Danger

The civil society group Forces Vives organized a major citizen march in Bukavu, the provincial seat of South Kivu, on Wednesday. In response to the alarming M23 rebel push into South Kivu via the border town of Minova, thousands of residents took to the streets to voice their concerns.

According to Maître Nene Bintu, the head of Civil Society South Kivu, “Congolese are being killed like flies, with millions of internally displaced people, accompanied by numerous humanitarian crises and their consequences,” expressing serious concerns about the administration. You attended the December 15, 2024, meeting alone, but the Kigali administration boycotted it, demonstrating its blatant disregard for the Luanda process. Demonstrators also denounced the illegal mining of minerals, a recurring issue in the region, while holding signs and shouting slogans.

Rich in natural riches, South Kivu has endured years of systematic looting by Chinese finance businesses that fund both domestic and international networks. Bukavu resident Fadhili Mubole voiced his worries about Chinese nationals engaging in illicit mineral mining on Mwenga land.
