Brazilian Coffee Farmers are Left in the Dark by Trump’s Threat of Tariffs

President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 50% duty on Brazilian imports to the US has raised doubts about this year’s coffee harvest in the northern Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The news of the levies was a shock to the region’s small producers.

Up until about a month and a half ago, we had excellent expectations for a strong harvest, a fair price, and a healthy coffee crop. And then, without warning, a bomb went off, leaving us unsure of whom to contact,” said José Natal da Silva, a Varre-Sai coffee producer.

Since there are no assurances that their product would reach the US, small coffee farmers have to swiftly adjust to the volatility of the international trade market by letting go of the workers they had engaged for the harvest and holding off on exporting.

Fernanda Marçola, who produces coffee, asked, “How can we buy the products that our crops need, as well as in our home, with our family, and with those around us?” Our hearts are in our hands as a result of everything. We still have no idea what the future holds.
