At Their Meeting in Tunis, Meloni and Saied Spoke About Migration and Development

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Tunisian President Kais Saied met in Tunis on Thursday to talk about ways to improve collaboration between the two countries and Italy’s ambitious Mattei Plan for Africa. Economic development, energy diversification, and reducing irregular migration were the main topics of the discussions, which took place in the presidential palace in Tunisia.

The Mattei Plan, named for Enrico Mattei, the founder of Italy’s state-owned energy conglomerate Eni, is Rome’s main initiative to promote sustainable development in Africa. Through job creation, infrastructure improvement, and the development of what Meloni refers to as a “non-predatory” alliance between Europe and Africa, the program seeks to lessen the stresses associated with migration.

Since North Africa is the entry point for thousands of economic migrants and asylum seekers each year, Italy has long been at the forefront of Europe’s migration issue. Meloni’s administration has advocated for a two-pronged strategy: strengthening border security and tackling the underlying problems through economic growth.

A key component of this plan is Tunisia, a significant migrant transit location. To manage migrant flows and advance cooperative initiatives under the Mattei Plan, it is believed that closer ties with President Saied’s administration are essential.
