As International Attempts To Stabilize Haiti Intensify, The Un Extends The Mission Of Binuh
A resolution extending the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti’s (BINUH) mandate for an extra year has been approved by the UN Security Council.
“The Haitian government, through my office, welcomes the unanimous adoption of resolution 2743, which extends BINUH’s mandate for another year,” said Antonio Rodrigue, Haiti’s Permanent Representative to the UN. This revitalization represents the continued dedication of the international community to promoting political stability, security, and peace in Haiti.
400 Kenyan police officers have traveled to Haiti in recent weeks to serve as the head of a multinational force supported by the UN. In order to assist Haiti’s reconstruction efforts, these officers hope to work closely with local and international partners as well as Haitian authorities.
“The Haitian population has hope for an end to their suffering and the violence they endure,” Rodrigue continued, referring to the arrival of the first contingents of Kenyan police officers from the Special Service Unit to support the Haitian National Police in their struggle against heavily armed gangs.
The United States would then donate more than $300 million to support the Special Service Unit in Haiti, according to a press conference held by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN. To improve security, this team will collaborate with the Haitian National Police.
