As DRC And M23 Adopt a Ceasefire Framework, There is Hope for Peace

The Congolese government and the M23 rebel group, which is supported by Rwanda, have reached a comprehensive ceasefire to halt the fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). A permanent cessation of air, sea, and land-based hostilities is part of the deal, which was made in Doha, Qatar. Additionally, it outlaws hate speech, sabotage, and any effort to annex additional territory via force.

Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Qatar, praised the development. “With a commitment to responsibly implement the agreement’s articles, the Declaration of Principles signed today sets the way for direct talks towards a comprehensive solution that addresses the conflict’s underlying causes,” he added.

Both parties have committed to working closely with regional and international organizations. A key provision is the path to reestablish state authority in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the government has long struggled to maintain control.

Reaffirming national sovereignty is “a normal thing for any country,” according to U.S. Senior Advisor Massad Boulos, who also underlined the necessity of ongoing communication and perseverance.
