Arrest Warrants are Issued For the Leaders of Somalia and Jubaland

A judge in Jubaland had already issued an arrest warrant for Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and now the federal government of Somalia has issued one for the president of Jubaland state in what may be considered a reciprocal action. Jubaland is led by President Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe, who has recently been embroiled in disputes with Somalia about its independence.

In a recent election, Madobe was proclaimed the victor to govern the region for a third straight term in Jubaland, one of Somalia’s five semi-autonomous regions. Madobe is being accused by Somalia of treason and giving foreign organizations access to confidential material.

However, in an attempt to overthrow Somalia’s constitutional order, Jubaland is accusing the country’s president of treason, instigating a civil war, and planning an armed revolt. According to Somalia, the Jubaland elections were conducted without their participation and are therefore still unlawful. In reaction to the polls, the Federal Republic of Somalia dispatched more troops to Jubaland earlier this week. In the lead-up to recent elections, there have been several reports of regional proxy battles. According to reports, Madobe supports Nairobi, while Ethiopia and the federal authorities support his rivals.
