Armed Men Threatened Migrants in a Mediterranean Rescue, According to Doctors Without Borders

Armed men allegedly threatened over 112 migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean, then fled with women and children as dozens of men and boys dove into the sea, according to Doctors Without Borders.

Seventy of the 83 men and unaccompanied youngsters were pulled from the sea when the humanitarian organization’s vessel, the Geo Barents, reached the scene in international waters off the coast of Libya on Thursday.
There were no recorded deaths.

Nearby, two speedboats carrying armed individuals posing as the Libyan coast guard were sighted. Twenty-four women and four children had been brought on board one boat, and the crew of the Geo Barents were informed that they would be turned over as soon as the men were saved.

In order to stop the migrant craft, the armed men reportedly fired into the air and into the ocean, according to one of the rescued men, whose wife and children were removed.

The man informed his rescuers that when he attempted to board their speedboat, the armed men shoved him back and only took women and children.
