After a Fatal Shipwreck, Senegal’s President Vows to Fight Human Trafficking

Search efforts for survivors are still on three days after a catastrophic catastrophe off the coast of Mbour claimed the lives of over 125 passengers, despite the remote possibility that any will be found. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who was clearly affected by the gravity of the situation, visited Mbour on Wednesday night in response to the issue.

Speech by the President

President Faye declared, “The situation is deeply unbearable, and the nation is in mourning.” “I offer the bereaved families my sincere condolences on behalf of the Senegalese people. The cause of this catastrophe, which has impacted not just Mbour but also other areas along the Senegalese coast, is networks involved in people trafficking. These networks take advantage of young people’s desperation by giving them fictitious hopes for a better future.

Government Reaction to Public Criticism

Although the President has denounced human trafficking organizations, the public’s dissatisfaction with the new government’s priorities is growing. Opponents contend that the administration has not made resolving Senegalese youth unemployment a top priority. Human rights expert and MP Moussa Diakhaté has long raised concerns about these problems, but he believes his views have gone unheeded.
