A New Electoral Law Approved by Gabon is Interpreted as a Victory For the Junta Leader

A new electoral code that opponents believe is in favour of junta leader Brice Oligui Nguema was ratified by Gabon’s transitional parliament on Monday. After days of discussions, the measure was passed, allowing magistrates and members of the security services to run as candidates in elections. Although Nguema has pledged to give civilians back control, there is a lot of conjecture that he wants to run for president.

The opposition, for its part, is calling for a formal prohibition on any military member of the transition committee running for president. However, junta members have recently started a propaganda campaign that experts believe is an attempt to create a favourable environment for a possible Nguema candidature.

Additionally, the measure proposes two parliamentary seats set aside for Gabonese living abroad. With the exception of the presidential election, it permits dual nationals to run for office without having to give up their other nationality. Additionally, the article transfers the authority for organising elections from local government to the interior ministry.
