A French Helpful Worker was Among Three People Killed in a DR Congo Air Attack
An air strike in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo killed a French charity worker for the UN Children’s Agency in a city controlled by the Rwanda-backed M23 militia. Since resuming hostilities in 2021, the M23 has taken areas of the mineral-rich Congolese east with Rwanda’s support, igniting a new cycle of warfare in a region long plagued by conflict.
Despite Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo striking a peace pact in early December at the request of US President Donald Trump, fighting between the M23 and the Congolese army have resumed.
According to humanitarian sources, numerous structures were targeted in midnight drone attacks, which killed two civilians, according to the UN peacekeeping force MONUSCO. It was unknown where the blows came from.
The Congolese army, stationed several hundred kilometres from Goma, often executes long-range drone strikes on the M23’s positions in the east. According to security sources, the M23 also uses explosive drones in front.
