Thousands are Forced to Evacuate as Houthis Move on Bab el-Mandeb Strait

Tens of thousands of people have been displaced in Yemen in recent days, fleeing the advance of Iran-backed Houthi militants. Many citizens of Aden, Yemen, have extended their houses to those displaced by the Houthi rebels’ seizure of the harbour city of Mokha.

In one of the houses, dozens of men lay on the floor, carpeted with thin mattresses and bedsheets. We set out in hysterical panic on a motorbike, not knowing where we were going, recalled Alaa Ali Salem, who fled with his family from Mokha’s al-Khawkha region.

“The roads were incredibly congested, and when I was driving, my motorbike overturned. “My wife, children, and I were all injured,” he said as he held his son. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 76,000 people have fled their homes in Yemen since July as combat has escalated, up from 46,000 just days ago. We saw soldiers shouting for a retreat as bullets flew everywhere, and we had no idea what was going on,” said Durrah Ali Hassan, who took refuge in a relative’s home in Aden.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have captured the Red Sea town of Mokha as well as a strategic island, bringing their forces to a crucial choke point for the world economy: the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that leads out of the Red Sea.
