Macky Sall Goes Back to Dakar to Ask for Help with his UN Bid

For the first time since stepping down, former Senegalese President Macky Sall will visit Senegal to see his successor, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, in an attempt to win Dakar’s support for his bid to become secretary-general of the United Nations. Following years of political strain between the two sides, the short visit takes place.

For the first time since leaving office in 2024, Macky Sall is scheduled to return to Senegal for a three-hour visit to secure official backing for his UN leadership campaign. In a statement posted on social media, the former president announced the trip and described it as a component of meetings and consultations related to his bid for the top position at the United Nations. He praised President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for welcoming him to Dakar, where he has only one scheduled appointment.

Sall is anticipated to arrive at Dakar’s former airport in Yoff around 3 p.m. and depart the nation at 6 p.m., according to members of his political party. The visit’s primary goal is to secure official support from Senegal, which has not yet publicly endorsed Sall’s candidacy and has been silent about his UN aspirations.

Twenty nations, including Senegal, opposed Sall’s campaign in March, and he was unable to win the African Union’s support. Dakar stated in a letter to the AU panel that it had not participated in the process and had neither encouraged nor started Sall’s candidacy. In a letter dated February 5, the former president had already asked Senegal for assistance, but he had not heard back.
