US Advisor Expresses ‘Cautious Optimism’ on Libya After Talks with Egyptian FM
The US President’s Senior Advisor on Arab and African Affairs met with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Sunday in Cairo to talk about the Libyan crisis. Massad Boulos stated that recent cooperation between the nation’s two rival authorities provides cause for optimism at a joint press conference following their meeting:
Boulos stated, “There is a cautious optimism, an optimism, I’m sorry, but it’s a cautious optimism because we’re seeing the two sides, the east and the west (of Libya), are meeting on a number of points and topics for the first time.”
Boulos mentioned the nation’s first unified national budget in 13 years and recent combined military exercises with the United States. A plan to hold the much anticipated presidential and parliamentary elections in eight months was approved by Libya’s top governing bodies on Thursday.
The oil-rich nation in North Africa has had difficulty recovering from the chaos that ensued when longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in a revolt supported by NATO in 2011. It is still split between an eastern rival government based in Benghazi and Tobruk and a UN-recognized government with its main office in Tripoli.
