Cameroonian Opposition Member Files Complaint in France Over President Paul Biya
Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary has filed two legal charges in France against President Paul Biya and many top officials, increasing his battle with the government months after the country’s contentious 2025 presidential election.
Tchiroma, who is living in exile in The Gambia, claims the accusations stem from allegations of human rights violations against his followers following the elections. Prior to the election, the former government minister parted with Biya and ran as an opposition candidate.
He continues to question the official results, which gave 93-year-old President Paul Biya another term in power. Tchiroma claims to be the real winner and accuses authorities of targeting opposition activists with arrests and repression following the poll.
The Cameroonian government denied the charges and dismissed the court action. The case marks a new chapter in the political stalemate between the veteran president and one of his former supporters, reflecting the ongoing tensions over the outcome of last year’s election. The French legal authorities will now determine whether to proceed with an investigation of the complaints.
