Due to a Suspected Arson Attack” at a Kenyan Girls’ School, Nine Students Were Charged in Court
On Wednesday, the High Court in the town of Naivasha, which is located 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of Nairobi, will make a decision regarding the nine girls’ potential one-month detention while investigations are conducted.
The 202-student dorm at Utumishi Girls School was destroyed by fire on May 28. Investigators claim that all of the pupils had to scramble through a single entrance because the school matron neglected to open an emergency door.
Interrogations of the suspected girls, who have been in police custody for five days, have shown that the fire was caused by lighting a mattress at the dorm’s exit with paraffin and a matchstick. Results from ongoing DNA tests to identify some of the victims that were completely burned are anticipated by Wednesday.
Just before students woke up and fled to safety, six students gathered in the hallway near the exit and started the fire, according to CCTV footage taken from the demolished dorm. Seven of the 79 pupils who were hurt in the event were evacuated to Nairobi for specialized care.
