The President of the Republic of Congo Has Meetings With his Russian Counterpart
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Congolese President Denis Sassou N’Guesso at the Kremlin. Putin stated that Russia sees “promising” potential for the expansion of bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly in the economic sector.
“These include geological exploration, energy, logistics, agriculture, and several other areas,” he stated. The Russian president congratulated Sassou N’Guesso on winning a fifth term in government last month, saying the Congo’s stable political climate had “good business prospects”.
With two prominent opposition leaders imprisoned and several in exile, the 82-year-old candidate had few opponents. Several opposition parties boycotted the election, which was won by Sassou N’Guesso with nearly 95% of the vote, claiming the process lacked credibility.
The Congolese president, for his part, informed Putin that “all the conditions” for the effective implementation of cooperation projects had been met. As you stated, the relations of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation in all fields, including security, defense, and economy” have existed for decades, he remarked.
