Three Soldiers Who Killed 21 Civilians in 2020 are Imprisoned by Cameroon

Cameroon has sentenced three soldiers to prison for their involvement in the killing of 21 citizens during the turmoil that occurred in the English-speaking northwest of the country in the year 2020, according to the attorneys for the victims who made the announcement on Friday.

A military court in Yaounde handed out the punishments on Thursday, according to the attorneys. The sentences were handed down in connection with the violence that occurred in February 2020. According to Human Rights Watch, government troops and ethnic Fulani militia raided the town of Ngarbuh and killed “at least” 21 inhabitants of that community.

According to the rights group, thirteen of the people who were killed as a result of the separatist unrest were youngsters, and one of the victims was a pregnant mother. During the week that followed the incident, Human Rights Watch (HRW) issued a statement in which it stated that the perpetrators of the violence set fire to five homes, looted them, and assaulted people.

The government had first dismissed the premise that its forces had actively participated in the violence, as well as the number of dead that HRW had tallied. In the end, however, Yaounde initiated a legal proceeding, which ultimately led to a conviction of military troops, which is an extremely uncommon occurrence.
