Nelson Mandela Rules Academy is Established at The Prison by Ramaphosa
By opening a new training academy at the Drakenstein Correctional Facility, where Nelson Mandela was formerly detained, President Cyril Ramaphosa commemorated 36 years since the former president’s release from prison on Wednesday.
The first institution in Africa devoted solely to the Nelson Mandela Rules, also known as the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, is the Nelson Mandela Rules Training Academy. The rules support treating those who are denied their freedom with respect, equity, and compassion.
Mandela’s legacy continues to influence international norms, according to Jane Marie Ong’olo, Regional Representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. “Throughout his life, Nelson Mandela remained a strong advocate for justice, fairness, and the humane treatment of all people, even after serving more than 27 years in prison,” she said. “The United Nations standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners are a living testament to his legacy.”
According to Ramaphosa, the academy serves as a knowledge base for the global correctional community as well as for South Africa and the larger Southern African area. He remarked, “I’ve been informed that this is the first facility of its kind on the African continent.
