Due to a Lack of Financing, Over a Million Nigerians Suffer from Hunger

The hunger crisis in northeastern Nigeria is expected to worsen sharply in the coming weeks, as the United Nations World Food Programme has warned it will be forced to cut food assistance to more than one million people because of a severe funding shortfall.

The WFP said on Thursday that it will significantly reduce its life-saving operations from February, reaching just 72,000 people. This is a dramatic fall from the 1.3 million people it supported during last year’s lean season, a period when food shortages are at their worst.

According to the agency, its resources in the region have been fully depleted, putting critical aid efforts at risk. Since 2015, the WFP has supported close to two million people each year in northeastern Nigeria, where conflict and displacement have left millions struggling to survive.

The cuts come as hunger levels across Nigeria reach unprecedented levels. The WFP estimates that around 35 million people nationwide could face severe hunger this year, the highest number the agency has ever recorded in the country. Ongoing violence has deepened the crisis, displacing about 3.5 million people, destroying crops and food stocks, and preventing many families from farming or earning a living.
