The Africa Cup Winners are Welcomed as Heroes Upon their Return to Dakar
Senegal’s national football team arrived back in Dakar late on Monday after winning the Africa Cup of Nations, receiving a warm and emotional welcome at the airport. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye was present to greet the players and celebrate their achievement.
Speaking at the reception, the president praised the team’s determination and discipline throughout the tournament. He said it was clear from the way they played that their goal was always to bring the trophy home and make the Senegalese people proud. He highlighted their attractive style of football, fair play, and professional behaviour both on and off the pitch, calling their victory heroic.
Senegal secured the title with a 1–0 win over host nation Morocco in a tense and chaotic final on Saturday. The match was briefly disrupted when some Senegal supporters attempted to enter the field. The players also faced criticism from a few commentators after leaving the pitch in protest over a disputed penalty decision. Despite this, celebrations in Dakar remained overwhelmingly positive.
Thousands of fans gathered to welcome the Teranga Lions, cheering, waving flags, and praising their heroes. One supporter, Bamba Sene, said the crowd had come to celebrate Africa’s champions and to honour Sadio Mané and the entire squad. He added that the victory made him proud to be Senegalese.
