After Tanzania’s Contentious Election, China Issues a Warning Against foreign Meddling
Following Tanzania’s contentious election late last year, China’s top diplomat issued a warning on Saturday against any outside meddling in the country. Wang Yi praised the nation for what he called the “successful conduct” of the elections in a statement released at the conclusion of an official visit.
China reiterated its full confidence in Tanzania’s leadership and institutions to manage internal affairs independently,” it stated. With 98% of the vote in both the parliamentary and presidential elections, Samia Suluhu Hassan maintained her position as president despite the exclusion of her primary opponents.
The post-election political violence that has damaged Tanzania’s relations with the West was not mentioned by Wang, who met with Hassan during his visit. The opposition claims that security forces killed at least 2,000 people after the October elections, which were deemed fraudulent by foreign observers.
Beijing has emphasized its support for the nation’s “national sovereignty and security” in the meantime. China has made significant investments in Tanzania in recent years, and Wang promised to deepen collaboration in a statement highlighting increased trade between the two nations over the past five years.
