The Military Chief of Gabon Declares His Intention to Run for President
Brice Oligui Nguema, the military leader of Gabon, has said he will run for president in April, nearly two years after spearheading a coup to overthrow more than fifty years of Bongo clan power. Nguema has promised to return control to civilians after a transitional period following President Ali Bongo’s overthrow in August 2023.
A new electoral rule that was approved by the interim Parliament in January allows magistrates and members of the armed forces to run for office.
During an address in the capital of Gabon, Nguema made the news. The 50-year-old urged the audience to support his candidacy, describing his vision for the country as a “Gabon rising from the ashes.”
According to the Facebook page Infos CTRI officiel, the former chief of the presidential guard must temporarily resign from his current position in order to enter the race. He will go back to the barracks if he is not elected,” the page continued.
