WHO Denounces Airstrikes in Sudan That Claimed 114 Lives

114 people, including 63 children, were killed in a series of airstrikes in South Kordofan State, Sudan, according to the chief of the World Health Organization. According to the WHO’s Attacks on Health Care tracking system, the attacks occurred on December 4 and targeted a kindergarten and the neighboring Kalogi Rural Hospital. Thirty-five more persons were hurt.

The Kalogi hospital was hit at least three times, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Later, survivors were sent to Abu Jebaiha Hospital for treatment, where medical staff desperately needed additional supplies and blood donations. Tedros also brought attention to claims that first responders and paramedics were attacked while attempting to transport injured children from the kindergarten to the hospital. Tedros reiterated his call for an end to the fighting and denounced the strikes as “senseless attacks on civilians and health facilities.”

He called on all parties to ensure humanitarian access and permit life-saving medical assistance to reach impacted communities. “Sudanese people have endured far too much suffering. Now put an end to the fighting,” he declared.
