According to Military Officials, Guinea-Bissau is Completely Under Their Control

Soldiers in Guinea-Bissau announced on Wednesday that they had seized control of the country, appearing on state television to declare that the military had “assumed the full powers of the State of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

The high command said the move was a response to what it called an ongoing plan to destabilize the nation by manipulating electoral results. The announcement followed a tense presidential election in which both leading candidates—incumbent Umaro Sissoco Embaló and opposition contender Fernando Dias da Costa claimed victory.

Gunfire was reported earlier in the day at several locations in the capital, Bissau, including near the presidential palace, though it remains unclear who was responsible. Military spokesperson Dinis N’Tchama said the armed forces had created a “high military command for the restoration of order, which would govern the country until further notice.

The new authority ordered the suspension of all state institutions, media activities, and the ongoing electoral process, and the closure of the country’s borders and airspace. Reports from Bissau indicated that roads leading to the presidential palace were blocked, with heavily armed and masked soldiers stationed at checkpoints.
