Uganda Arrests Senior Deputy Army Leader for’Subversive Acts
Ugandan police arrested former deputy military chief Peter Elwelu on Monday on suspicion of plotting to destabilise areas of the country, according to the military. Peter Elwelu, a three-star general who was the deputy commander of defence forces from 2021 to 2024, was arrested on Monday, according to military spokeswoman Col. Chris Magezi.
Elwelu was “on the run over involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilise” a remote area of eastern Uganda where he was born and reared, according to Magezi. “The security forces recently recovered 15 guns in his possession, military fatigues, and two pickup trucks.”
Elwelu couldn’t be reached for comment. He was being detained by military personnel in an undisclosed place. The government has yet to prove the claims against him. According to the BBC, his wife assured local media that he was innocent.
Prior to Elwelu’s arrest, Ugandan military chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba accused him of treacherous operations following his retirement from active duty last year. Kainerugaba stated that he had instructed the search party to capture Elwelu alive.
