Akon was Detained for Neglecting to Appear in Court Regarding the Suspension of His License
Hip-hop artist Akon was briefly jailed last Friday after being arrested in Chamblee, an Atlanta suburb, for failing to appear in court over a citation related to driving with a suspended license, according to local police records. He was released on bail the same day.
The case traces back to a September 10 traffic stop in Roswell, where officers found the singer, legally known as Aliaune Thiam, stranded in a Tesla Cybertruck on a busy road. A police check revealed his driver’s license had been suspended due to a prior missed court appearance in January 2023 and that he lacked valid auto insurance. The vehicle was impounded, and Akon was cited at the scene.
A warrant was later issued when he missed his court hearing for that citation. Police located the impounded Cybertruck through a traffic camera at a business on Friday, leading to his arrest by Chamblee police. Akon was transferred to Roswell authorities, booked into jail, and later posted bail.
Despite the legal setback, the Grammy-nominated artist, known for tracks such as “Smack That” and “Locked Up, resumed his schedule and performed in New Delhi, India, just two days after the arrest. Representatives for the singer have not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident.
