Ethiopia has Been Selected to Host the UN Climate Summit in 2027
Ethiopia has secured the hosting rights for the 2027 climate summit, narrowly beating Nigeria in the bid. The East African nation also hosted this year’s Africa Climate Summit in September, an event widely referred to as the “Africa COP.” The summit is set to highlight Africa’s critical role in driving climate justice and innovative solutions.
African countries, despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, continue to face severe climate impacts. As a result, they have consistently called on developed nations to increase financial support for adaptation and mitigation efforts.
Meanwhile, COP30 kicked off this week in Belem, Brazil, with a strong appeal to global leaders and delegates to address rising temperatures and accelerate coordinated climate action. The conference emphasizes boosting emissions reductions, strengthening climate resilience, and ensuring a fair and inclusive transition. The host country for next year’s summit remains undecided, with Australia and Turkey still competing for the opportunity.
