The President of Madagascar Holds Negotiations in Spite of the Boycott by Protesters

On Wednesday, President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar extended an invitation to a number of civil society organizations to meet in the presidential palace. In the midst of a nationwide protest movement that has been going on since September 25, the endeavor was an effort to reclaim control and ameliorate the nation’s dilemma.

High-ranking religious officials, university presidents, students, youth organizations, business owners, businesses impacted by looting, unions, teachers, athletes, artists, and journalists were among the more than 1,500 individuals who answered the appeal.

The president is depending on a number of ongoing projects, such as the commissioning of a 105-megawatt thermal power plant, the installation of 100 megawatt solar parks, and the delivery of 60 megawatt generators, to fulfill his pledge.

“We will even carry [the generators] by plane if needed, so that there will be no more outages here in Antananarivo and throughout Madagascar,” he stated.  Protests, meanwhile, continued all day long in the capital’s streets.
