Congo Launches Ebola Vaccinations for Health Workers and Close Contacts Amid Outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it has deployed experts to Kasai province alongside Congo’s Rapid Response Team to reinforce disease surveillance, treatment, and infection prevention in health facilities. The organization is also supplying protective gear, mobile lab equipment, and essential medical materials.

WHO confirmed that Congo has stockpiles of both treatments and the Ervebo Ebola vaccine. “We had previously prepositioned 2,000 doses of Ebola vaccine in Kinshasa, which we are now releasing to vaccinate health workers and identified contacts,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

This marks Congo’s 16th Ebola outbreak. Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that the current fatality rate is estimated at 53.6%. The first confirmed case involves a 34-year-old pregnant woman from Boulapé, in southern Kasai province. Investigations into additional suspected cases are ongoing. So far, the provisional report records 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths  14 in Boulapé and one in Mweka including four among health care workers,” Kamba said.
