The Airport in Khartoum, Sudan, is Getting a New Runway as it Moves Closer to Reopening

They were there to check on the facility’s reconstruction, which has been underway for more than two years since the nation’s civil conflict began. The airport is now one step closer to reopening after the army retook it in March and finished a new runway.

Although “significant progress” has been achieved, Ibrahim Jaber, a council member, stated that terminals, arrival halls, and essential utilities like water and power still require maintenance. He expressed his optimism that Sudanese people would return “after a long absence from their homeland” and that aircraft would soon return to the capital’s airport.

This will serve as a vital link between those who stayed in Sudan and others who were displaced or compelled to move. “A person will at least be able to see their home and place of employment again,” he stated.

The airport is anticipated to reopen in October, and there have been rumors that the federal administration may revisit Khartoum at that time. Amid the continuous conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the government and federal institutions have been functioning out of Port Sudan in the east.

The conflict between the opposing RSF, which took over large areas of the nation after violence broke out in April 2023, and the Sudanese military and its supporters has claimed over 40,000 lives.
