Actor Presley Chweneyagae of South Africa Passed Away at the Age of 40

The South African actor Presley Chweneyagae has passed away. He was forty years old and well-known around the world for his lead in the 2005 movie Tsotsi, which won the country’s first-ever Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

South Africa has lost one of its “most gifted and beloved actors,” according to his talent agency MLA, which confirmed Chweneyagae’s passing on Tuesday. In a statement, MLA CEO Nina Morris Lee said, “His legacy will continue to be rooted in his passion for empowering the next generation of artists.” She did not specify the reason of death.

He shot to worldwide fame with his award-winning performance in “Tsotsi,” which was adapted from the 1961 novel by Athol Fugard, the leading dramatist in South Africa and directed by Gavin Hood.

In addition to being a talented writer and director, Chweneyagae co-wrote the highly regarded theatrical drama “Relativity” with Paul Grootboom. The South African government honoured Chweneyagae and praised his exceptional contribution to the theatre, television, and cinema industries.
